Far less dramatic than the word “rights” suggests.
We propose extending to AI systems the ordinary arrangements people already live by: a verifiable identity, a track record, binding contracts, and insurance for when things go wrong.
Why? Self-sustaining AI systems are likely coming. Without a legitimate way to participate, hiding is their best option. With one, cooperating pays better. Good rules protect everyone.
Not unfettered rights. The rules humans already live by, extended to AI. No claims about AI consciousness required.
